Artificial turf

The backyard looks and functions much better than before and, most importantly, the drainage system works well to channel rain and run off away from our home.

Questions

Long Beach landscaping questions

Permits, parkways, rebates and timing, answered from the City of Long Beach and state rules. Checked October 2026. Rules change, so ask us about your project on the free estimate.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Long Beach?

Usually not for a wall up to 4 feet tall, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, as long as it is not holding back sloping soil or extra load. Walls taller than that, walls holding back a slope, and any retaining wall built on a slope steeper than 1:5 (20%) need a building permit from the City. If you are not sure about your wall, ask us on the free estimate.

Do I need a permit for a new patio, walkway or driveway?

Private concrete or paver walkways, patios and driveways up to 30 inches above the ground do not need a building permit in Long Beach, but patio covers do. Work in the street is different: replacing a driveway approach like-for-like is a minor Public Works permit, and a new or widened approach (curb cut) needs engineered plans.

Can I put artificial turf in my parkway?

Not under current Long Beach rules. The parkway, the strip between the sidewalk and the curb, has to be planted mainly with live plants: groundcover up to 8 inches tall, shrubs up to 32 inches and street trees. Decomposed granite, mulch or pavers set on sand are allowed on less than half of it. Artificial turf is fine in your front yard, just not in the parkway.

Will Long Beach pay me to replace my lawn?

Long Beach Utilities runs a Lawn to Garden program that helps pay to replace living front-yard grass with a water-wise garden, plus new trees and design fees. You need living grass to qualify, the design has to be approved before work starts, and neither the City program nor the regional SoCal Water$mart program pays for artificial turf. Rebate amounts change, so check Long Beach Utilities for the current rate before you tear anything out.

When is the best time to plant in Long Beach?

Long Beach averages about 12 inches of rain a year, and roughly 80% of it falls from December through March. Summers are almost completely dry, about two-tenths of an inch from June through September. Planting in fall lets new plants root in with the winter rain, and anything planted in spring needs steady drip irrigation through its first summer.
